Performing studies with telemedicine: ethical, technical and safety considerations. A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW

Imagine being sick and needing medical help, but the nearest clinic is hours away- or closed because of a pandemic. Telemedicine offers a solution: doctors and nurses can now consult with patients through video calls, phone apps, or wearable devices. This technology has grown rapidly in recent years, especially during COVID-19, when many hospitals were overwhelmed and face-to-face care became risky or impossible. This thesis explores what makes telemedicine safe, fair, and reliable. First, it looks at how patients give consent when they aren’t physically in a hospital. For example, do elderly people or those with limited digital skills fully understand what they’re agreeing to when using a health app? It also studies how we keep patient data secure when it's transmitted online- like preventing hackers from stealing medical information. In addition, the research examines the technical side: what kind of internet connection, devices, and software are needed to make remote care work smoothly? Finally, the thesis looks at what happens during emergencies- can telemedicine really help when time is critical? By reviewing 25 international studies, this thesis identifies both the benefits and the challenges of telemedicine. It shows that while digital healthcare can improve access, especially in rural or underserved communities, it must be carefully managed to protect patient rights and safety. The goal is to help shape better policies, tools, and training so that telemedicine becomes a trustworthy part of modern healthcare not just in times of crisis, but for everyone, everywhere and always.
