Evidences of Endocrine-disrupting chemicals in Africa : a scoping review

Are Hidden Chemicals Threatening Our Health? A Look at the African Experience Every day, we come into contact with chemicals—from the plastic containers we use, to the cosmetics we apply, and even the food we eat. But did you know some of these everyday products contain substances that could interfere with how our bodies work? Some of these substances can confuse our endocrine system. They are called endocrine-disrupting chemicals, or EDCs. They sneak into our systems and act like hormones, or block the real ones, throwing our body’s natural balance off course. The result? Potential problems with growth, development, fertility, and even the risk of certain diseases. A recent scientific review took a closer look at what we know about EDCs in Africa. Researchers analysed over 100 African studies to see where these chemicals are also found in the environment of Africa and what effects they might be having. Most of the studies came from just two countries—South Africa and Nigeria—showing a gap in knowledge across the rest of the continent. Still, they were able to identify EDC-contaminated hotspots in 13 African countries. From big cities to rural communities, EDCs are showing up in water, soil, air, and even in the food chain. This matters because many people may be exposed without even realizing it. Even more concerning, some fish in contaminated waters were found to have both male and female reproductive organs. This is a clear sign that EDCs are interfering with the hormones that control reproduction and development—not just in animals, but potentially in humans too. The studies didn’t just highlight the risks—it also pointed to how little we still know. There simply isn’t enough research yet across most African countries. Without more data, it’s hard to fully understand the scale of the problem or how to fix it. So why should we care? Because these chemicals don’t just vanish. Many of them may build up over time and do not easily disappear from the environment (e.g. the pesticide DDT), and their effects can therefore last for generations. Children, in particular, are at higher risk since their bodies are still developing. There is a clear need to raise awareness about EDCs. Government, researchers, and citizens should push for better regulations, safe products, and a cleaner environment. It’s a long road, but understanding the problem is the first step. EDCs may be invisible, but their impact is not. By learning more about these chemicals and where they’re found, African countries could take meaningful steps to defend the health of their people, animals, and ecosystems—for today and for generations to come. After all, protecting our health means protecting the environment we live in.
