Mind the Screen: The effect of screen time on the short-term working memory of children between the age of 5 and 12

Today’s children grow up in a world full of screens, they are surrounded by tablets, smartphones, computers, and TVs in their daily lives. Parents often wonder what this means for their child’s developing brain. That is what I tried to explore in my master’s thesis. I focused on children aged 5 to 12, for whom national guidelines recommend no more than two hours of screen time a day. I looked at whether screen time might affect children’s working memory, which is the brain’s ability to hold and use information, like remembering instructions or solving a problem. I used data from a larger study in which children took memory tests and parents reported how much time their child spent on different types of screens (like computers/laptops, tablets or smartphones) for different purposes (learning, fun or social connection). I looked for patterns between screen use and memory performance. I found that children who spent more time using tablets for fun, like watching videos or playing games, scored lower on memory tasks, especially boys. More smartphone use for fun was also linked to lower memory in girls. Interestingly, tablet use for learning (like schoolwork) also showed a negative link with memory in all participating children. But when we looked at girls alone, more educational tablet time was linked to better memory scores. For boys, no clear link was found. Finally, girls with higher total screen time had lower scores for memory, while this was not seen in boys. Memory is important for learning and doing well in school. If screen time affects memory, that is something we need to take seriously. Current screen time guidelines are quite general. The findings from this study suggest we may need more specific recommendations depending on screen type, use purpose, and even the child’s sex. First of all, I want to address parents who are concerned about the effects of the screen use of their child. According to my findings you don’t need to ban all screen time, but being more mindful about how and why they are used can help. Secondly, I want to address policymakers, the screen time guidelines may need updating to better reflect modern screen use and its different effects. Lastly, and probably most importantly, I want to address researchers by highlighting the need for more studies to understand these patterns and further explore differences in screen types, purposes and differences between boys and girls. In conclusion, screens are part of modern life, but we need to learn to use them wisely. By understanding how different screen behaviours affect children’s brains, we can support healthier development.
