Movement Biomechanics after Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction: the added value of Virtual Reality during Return to Sport Screening.

Popularizing summary of the research ACL injuries are common in soccer and are often associated with prolonged rehabilitation periods and high risks of re-injury. These type of injuries often occur during the same maneuvers, one of them being the side-step cutting maneuver. For this study traditional testing was performed, using LED reaction lights and a more advanced technique, using virtual reality (VR). VR gives us the opportunity to immerge the player in real life game situations where the player must constantly react to their surroundings. Comparing the dominant leg (preferably used to perform a certain movement e.g., kicking a ball) with the non-dominant leg (usually used to support yourself or keep your balance), is relevant to notice differences in movements, and if these differences changed depending on the testing environment. Interestingly, certain movement patterns, such as knee angles and cutting speed, were found to be different between-legs, mostly in the traditional, non-virtual reality (nVR) setting. These differences were less evident in the VR setting. The results suggest that reactive, sport-specific testing can provide a more refined picture of movement risk.
