Development of an online-platform for education in microscopy for medical microbiology
Van Herreweghe Wouter, 2025
Since its invention, microscopy has been at the heart of biological discovery, enabling scientists to study cells and pathogens. For biomedical students and professionals, mastering microscopy is invaluable to understand biology but also to diagnose diseases like bacterial infections and parasitic infections. Traditional microscopy education faces some challenges however, including the increasing student numbers, limited resources and the need for physical supervision. To address these issues, this thesis contributed to the use of virtual microscopy in the field of medical microbiology by further developing the platform WEMDI (Website for education and quality control in the microscopic detection of infections). Once finished, WEMDI will serve as an online learning environment where students and professionals can explore microscopic slides virtually, alongside interactive question sets and background materials. This approach provides more flexibility for both students and teachers by reducing the need for physical equipment and supervision. By combining traditional microscopy with digital innovation, this thesis tried to contribute to the future of education in medical microbiology, giving students the necessary tools to become qualified professionals in their field.
